Director Statement
FINE TIME came out of a personal experience that I recently had. I really agonized about my feelings at the time, and I thought making a movie about it would help ease the tension. I was reminded of Ingmar Bergman when he said that making The Seventh Seal helped cure his fear of death. Making this film certainly helped me come to terms with my own situation.
At the time I was surrounded by immense inspiration: I started reading Haruki Murakami’s novels and watching Éric Rohmer’s films. I wanted to create a deeply personal blend of engaging dialogue and magical realism. The film’s title comes from an Eraserheads song about wanting to spend time with a person you like, no matter how long it can be. That’s certainly what Joseph feels, in between his cinematic flights of fancy. I can only hope the viewer enjoys the ride.
